December 2007: Step 10 Colour Selection
Hello, this is Dana Smithers from Sun On My Back Redesigns,
This is my final eNewsletter for 2007. Thank you for taking the time to read my newsletters this year. I appreciate your comments and the changes you are making to the way you live in your home. For those of you who are selling I know you will put these changes in place for 2008 if you haven't sold already!
This month we are looking at our Step 10 Colour Selection, our final step in our 10 Step No-Fail Formula for Redesigning or Staging your home to create harmony and balance throughout. I am sure your home looks much better to you than it did at the start of the year. Don't despair if you have not applied all the tips and techniques in this newsletter. Change takes time and you can always refer back to my newsletters. Creating the home you love is organic and forever evolving just as we are.
If you are just receiving my newsletter for the first time go to my HOME PAGE on the left hand side under eNewsletter Archives and click on Read TIPS archives here. There you will find previous newsletter TIPS on Step 1. FUNCTION; Step 2. FOCAL POINTS; Step 3. CONVERSATION GROUPINGS; Step 4 CASEGOODS; Step 5 FLOORING; Step 6 & 7 ART & ACCESSORIES; Step 8 LIGHTING and Step 9 WINDOW TREATMENTS.
Step 10. COLOUR for Living.
Surrounding yourself with colours that you love is one of the most important decorating choices you will make in your home. If you do not like the colours in your home you will never feel content in your home, never.
COLOUR choices are very emotional and oh so very personal. Depending on the style you have in your home or each room (hopefully they are connected) you have an infinite number of options to select from.
Choose an overall home colour scheme.
Carry this colour scheme into every room in your home.
When deciding on an Overall Colour Scheme you need to have a starting point for your inspiration.
- Decide what or where your inspiration will come from. Find an object, a painting, a picture from a decorating magazine, a favourite photo, a piece of fabric, a piece of clothing, a favourite memory of a place or any thing that gives you the kinds of feelings that you want to have in your home.
- Determine which 3 colours you love. As most of my readers have discovered '3' really is that magic number in decorating. You can make your colour scheme more complex by using more colours but I prefer to keep things simple
- The 3 main colours you have chosen can be used throughout your home as wall colours, fabric colours and accessory colours.
- Since colour selection is a big choice I recommend that you work with a professional colour consultant in a paint store or hire one. The cost of consulting with a professional colour consultant is nominal compared to the cost of making a big colour choice mistake. If you go to my website under OUR SERVICES you will find my Referral Team. Any of my team will be able to assist you with a colour consultation in your area.
TIP: If you want to learn more about why you like the colours you do, and your colour personality google some of these keywords: my colour personality; colour psychology; what colour means; etc. We are attracted to different colours for different reasons; and our colour preferences change over time. (Whether you type in colour or color you will get the same response).
I love to surround myself with warm colours. My favourite colour right now is red.

Step 10. COLOUR for Selling
Changing paint colours is one of the most cost effective updates you can do for your home when selling; and it has a big impact on the overall look and feel of your home. For specific paint colour choices check out my website under Articles: Best Colours To Paint A Home For Resale. I think most people who are selling are aware that more neutral colours are what work best for interiors and exteriors.
TIP: To see what is selling and appealing go to the new development Open Houses. Also check out Open Houses in your area to see what you like, and keep asking yourself which colours appeal to you if you were moving in.
While this is fine for living the colour is outdated and the den needs to go back to being a bedroom.

A recent client testimonial:
"I called Dana because I felt very confused about all the different styles I had going on. My home didn't seem to flow and yet I have so many things that I love in my home. Well I was so surprised and delighted when I came home at the end of the day - what a beautiful transformation! My home looks so nice and everything flows from room to room now. I am particularly impressed with Dana's eyes to see colour, balance, and details: I am 'in love' with my house again. The items that Dana purchased for me really updated my place and they pull the look together - as the result I saved lots of money! I invited my friends the following weekend to show off my house and they were amazed as well."

I wanted to end this year with one of my favourite quotes about our home:
QUOTE FROM JOHN O'DONOHUE – Beauty, The Invisible Embrace
"...Is it not possible that a place could have huge affection for those who dwell there? Perhaps your place loves having you there. It misses you when you are away and in its secret way, rejoices when you return. "
Warmest Regards,
Dana J. Smithers
