March 2008: Decorating 101
Hello, this is Dana Smithers from Sun On My Back Redesigns,
Thank you for taking the time to read my newsletter and to provide me with your wonderful comments about how my newsletter is making a difference in the way you live in your home, and how you sell your house.
I was especially touched by so many of you acknowledging that you do in fact live with a lot of clutter – things that you really no longer love, need or use. Be kind to yourself and know that this is an on-going process for us. My intention with my Decorating 101 Series is to help you move forward to create an environment that you love to be in for living; and are proud of for selling.
DECORATING 101
Find your Starting Point. What do you have in your home that you LOVE?
We all go through decorating stages and phases because life is very organic always changing always moving us forward. For some people they are moving in together, some out, some of you can afford more now, some of you are thinking of selling, some of you are downsizing and need less, some of you just want a change and some of you change all the time. Whatever your circumstances these tips will help you move ahead!
Many of you have heard this expression: "people come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime". I feel the same way about home décor and our furnishings. Some furnishings we will keep forever. This work of art is my 'Starting Point' in my home and I will have it forever. The artist is Pierre Ruiz originally from France who now resides in Vancouver. Typical of many artists his website is not yet completed but stay tuned and check out his other art at www.pierreruizart.com.
Your STARTING POINT for LIVING:
Buy yourself a notebook and/or a file folder and start collecting looks that you love. They could be pictures, fabric samples, things on the beach, in a barn, etc.
Keep sifting through it and deleting - eventually you will narrow it down to a look you do love and you will be very clear on what that look is. It will be 'your new look'.
Pay attention to the things you see you are choosing over and over, what connects them to each other? There is always some commonality and as I say when 'the dots are connecting' your home will have 'flow'.
Find something that truly inspires you and makes you say YES, I LOVE THIS and then we can start to create a home you will love to be in.
Your STARTING POINT for SELLING:
Decide on a look for your home that is just right for your target market.
In each room determine what your best architectural features are and highlight those.
Check out other Open Houses and see what attracts you to the look of the home, and what does not. This includes the exterior as well as the interior.
Duplicate what you can while keeping in mind that you have a certain amount of time, money and energy to invest to sell for top dollar and as soon as possible.

Each month we are looking for the 'right' Training Homes that we can teach our students Redesign for living, and Redesign Staging for selling. All of our Training Programs involve some component of hands-on work in real client's home. Check out our website for more details under SERVICES.
To be eligible for our REDESIGN OR STAGING TRAINING HOME you need:
- enough furnishings for us to work with - rearrange, regroup, showcase
- 3 rooms we can make over such as living room, dining room, family room, etc.
- typically you will have 1500+ square feet in your home
