May 2007

.Hello, this is Dana Smithers from Sun On My Back Redesigns,

Thank you for taking the time to read my newsletters. I appreciate your comments and the changes you are making to the way you live in your home. For those of you who are selling I know you are getting the message!

This month we are looking at our  Step 4 in our 10 Step No-Fail Formula for Redesigning or Staging your home to create harmony and balance throughout.

If you are just receiving my newsletter for the first time go to my HOME PAGE and click on Archived Newsletters on the left and you will have information on Step 1. FUNCTION; Step 2. FOCAL POINTS and Step 3. CONVERSATION GROUPINGS.

Step 4. CASEGOODS  for Living

Casegoods is a decorating design term that refers to most things other than sofas and chairs. It typically includes tables, bookcases, desks, bedside tables, end tables, side boards, sofa tables and coffee tables.

Most of our decorating guidlelines work around the 'Magic Number 3'. We apply this when we are creating balance and harmony with our casegoods too.

  1. Coffee Tables and End Tables - keep your wood types and colour choices to a maximum of 3. Any more than this and the eye is not able to rest.
  2. Antiques & Modern Pieces -  don't be afraid to mix and coordinate more modern casegoods with antiques. Using a modern espresso leather ottoman can work beautifully wtih a set of traditional end tables.
  3. Eclectic Mixing -  using 'good' eclectic' involves mixing 2 styles together with one more dominant than the other.
  4. Bookcases - can look fabulous with only books on them for a library look. if you do this consider taking the covers off for show and make sure you line the books up at the edge of the bookshelf not the back. If you want to mix and mingle your books with accessories try putting some books on their sides and zig-zagging them. Small accessories such as carvings and photos add interest to an otherwise bland bookshelf. Keep your heavier pieces on the bottom shelf such as photo albums and large coffee table books.

TIP: Consider showcasing some of your finer casegoods. Perhaps now is the time to get that treasured antique piece refinished.

This gorgeous baby grand piano was delegated to the back of the room....

.

 After the redesign - showcased!

       .

Step 4. CASEGOODS for Selling

  • All of your furnishings need to leave a room or area with a spacious feel especially for selling. The buyer needs to see what looks attractive in a bedroom so that they can envision their things in that room.

This young girl's bedroom needed some rearranging of the casegoods to show it off...

.

By depersonalizing and repositioning the casegoods the 'princess' room shows well!

.

Remember for SELLING, you want to create the illusion (or reality) of more space.
